Porous and spherical particles of poly (gamma-methyl L-glutamate) were prepared by our unique method. The diameter of spheres was controlled by adjusting the suspension condition, for example the concentration of poly(vinyl alcohol) as a suspension medium and poly (gamma-methyl L-glutamate), stirring spped and suspension temperature. As a result, we obtained poly (gamma-methyl L-glutamate) spheres with average diameters of 0.1 mum to 1000 mum The macroreticulation of spheres was achieved by use of diluent in the process of sphering. Hydrophobic solvents with partial polar groups were effective to make macroporous, for example decahydronaphthalene, dialkylphthalate and oleic acid. The secondary structures of peptide chains in the spheres was determined. The content of secondary structures is adjustable by incubation of material solution and treatment of formic acid. The affinity of spheress for proteins were examined by a column method. The spheres have specific affinity for proteins. This is in agreement with the result presented here, where transformation incidences were reduced in the presence of PKC activators.
