The esthetic acceptance of a restoration, fabricated to replace or restore a missing or diseased tooth, is Influenced by a great many factors, I. e., color and Its elements of hue, value and chroma ; translucency and opacity ; light transmission and scattering ; gloss ; deep components ; surface texture ; metamerism ; and fluorescence.There have been many attempts to reproduce the optical properties of natural teeth. One of the optical properties is luminous transmittance of tooth crown, that is also called translucency or transmission haze. This property can be accurately and meaningfully described, and even more important, it can be analyzed, and the differences between it and another translucency can be understood and specified.There is not yet an acceptable translucent measurement system for teeth. The discrimination of translucency means perception of the difference between two translucent properties. Before the manufacture of a set of the available dental standard translucent guides, the results of the experiments on the discrimination threshold for translucency of tooth crown and individual variation are reported in this study.The subjects were a total of 20 male and female students, oral hygienists and dentists. They were from 18 to 30 years old and had no trichromat. The ability to discriminate haze difference was examined according to the principle of haze comparison by the paired difference test.The following results were obtained :1. Reading average for the actual least perceptible haze difference of subjects was 0.76%. And the greatest and least value were 1.4% and 0.3%.2. In general, the larger the haze difference is, the more easily it can be discriminated, but this was found to be not always the case.
