日本独自の商社形態として、1900年代から1910年代にその内実をかためた総合商社=三井物産を分析対象として、研究をすすめた。その際、まず商社内競争の局面から考察するという視角から分析をはじめ、ついで商社間競争の局面から考察するという視角をとった。その理由は、商社間競争が商社内競争に支えられて展開する、商社内競争こそが商社間競争をおこなうための原動力となっているからである。商社内競争に関しては、各店・各部・各課の独立採算制度や予算・経費査定制度などの変遷・内容を分析し、ほぼ1910年代に、強力なインセンティブを職員層に与え商品取引への積極的取組みを促す機構が内部に形成されたことを明らかにした。ついで、この商社内競争を促進する機構と連動しながら、商社間競争を積極的・攻勢的におこなうための機構が形成されていくことを検討した。すなわち、共通計算制度→首部制度→部制度へという発展についてである。この制度は、東アジアにおける商習慣、外国商社の活動形態に規定されながら、これらから受ける制約をうち破ろうとする過程で形成されたものである。三井物産は、これらの制約をうち破ろうとして、一手販売方式と見込商売方式を採用した。これらの方式のうち、とくに後者の方式が部制度形成を促す基本的要因であり、しかも前者の方式も部制度と親和的性格を持っていた。三井物産は、部制度によってリスクを管理するとともに、(1)大量の信用供与によって花主・販売先を確保し商品量を拡大する方式、(2)迅速に各店・各部間の貸借関係を決済し、三井物産内部の資金の流れを本店本部がコントロ-ルして、多額の調達資金のコストを低減する本店集中型資金流通方式などを採用し、攻勢的に商社間競争をおこなったのである。
