In this study, the dowel and the bond action of the main bar in reinforced concrete members were examined experimentally and their effects on the shear capacity, the failure mode and the shear transfer mechanism were discussed.At first, the preparatory analyses were made considering the shear crack, the dowel action of main bar, the splitting crack along the main bar and the bond deterioration. On the basis of the analytical results, the shear capacity tests of reinforced concrete members were planned. The dowel shear force, the bond stress, the stresses of shear reinforcements and so on were measured in detail. And their relations to the shear capacity and the failure modes were discussed. As a result, experimental results well agreed with the analytical predictions and the suitability of the analytical model could be confirmed.From the analytical and the experimental results, it was proved that the restrain of dowel displacement of main bar could minimize the propagation of the splitting crack along the main bar. And the bond deterioration would less occur. And as a result, the large shear capacity could be obtained. Then, the intensive shear reinforcing method was proposed as a way to restrain the dowel displacement of main bar effectively. And its effectiveness was proved experimentally and analytically.Furthermore, there would be much possibility to be able to apply the intensive shear reinforcing method to the precast concrete members that have the sleeve joints at the member end. For the practical use, it must be proved that the shear capacity and the deformability can be maintained. Then in this study, the probability was proved by the pilot tests.
