江戸時代の加賀藩では13分割による特殊な不定時法が使われ、文政年間に加賀藩士遠藤高環等が行った2度の時制の改正、即ち、12分割不定時制の採用および新しい13等分割の不定時制が採用されていた。13分割時制の起りおよび改正および再改正の理由などを含め、江戸期の不定時制運用の実体を明らかにすることが本研究の目的である。平成2年度に引き続き、加賀瀋に於いて時制の改訂に携わった遠藤高環等の観測手引き書、日記等の文献調査を行った。把握した加賀瀋の時刻制度の特徴は、13番目の時刻「余時」が、時制改正前では長さが不定であるのに対し、再改正後では13等分割の時間単位として明確に定義されていることである。長さの不定な「余時」の解釈で最も有力と思われる仮説として「余時」の緩衝機能説を提案した。文献調査によって、遠藤高環の「金沢時鐘記」に掲載されている時刻と太陽位置の関係図に書き込まれた説明書きが、仮説を証明する材料として有力であることが判った。時制の再改正において採用された13等分割は緩衝時間としての「余時」に対して、他の時刻と同じ半時の重みを与えたものである。12等分割が否定され13等分割が採用された理由は不明瞭な点が多いが、垂瑶球儀の採用で技術的には可能になった。なお、13等分割は明治時代の始め迄続いた。13分割および13等分割は加賀瀋の時制の大きな特徴であるが、他の地域においても時鐘の時刻決定や運用面では同様の「余時」があってもおかしくない。遠藤の「和西時分契」は、但し書きによると上野の時鐘を聞いて描かれたものである。これが13分割に類似する目盛りとなっていることは江戸の時鐘も「余時」と同様の緩衝時間を持っていたことが想像される。「余時」の使用の解釈は一応できたが、今後さらに多くの文献から傍証を確立させたい。
