项目摘要

江戸期の不定時制の研究は、従来文献の中に見られる時刻の断片的な記述によって行われてきたため、季節による時刻の変化の様子を正確に捉えることは難しかった。本研究では和時計の形式の1つである尺時計の文字盤に着目し、これに刻まれた当時の時刻目盛を実測して、江戸期に実際に使用された不定時刻の実態を捉えることを試みた。尺時計の時刻目盛に個体差があることは判っているが、その理由としては、(1)地域的なものと(2)製作者的なものとが考えられる。不定時制は地方時の一種で、時刻はその土地の緯度と明け六ッ、暮れ六ッを決める太陽の伏角をどう取るかに大きく影響を受ける。このように製作地域によって、時刻目盛が地域特有の特徴を示すことが考えられる。また、時刻の計算は天文学的知識を必要とするが、製作者達が十分な知識を持っていたとは考えにくく、複製のくり返しの結果、文字盤にいくつかの系統が生まれると考えることもできる。測定可能な文字盤は、尺時計に付属する節板と呼ばれる7枚1組の目盛板、及び1枚の板に季節の時刻をグラフ状に刻んだ目盛板である。実測した尺時計は、国立科学博物館に寄託または収蔵されているものの他、関東地区、関西地区、九州・山口地区の調査によるもの、書籍カタログ類など合わせて30点にのぼった。得られたデ-タを比較し分類した結果、尺時計の時刻目盛はそれぞれ微妙な個体差があり、さらにいくつかの群に大別できることがわかった。それによれば地域的な理由による個体差の印象が強いが、現時点では文字盤から製作地及び製作者を特定するには至っていない。なお、調査対象の国立科学博物館の精密尺時計に記された時刻が、金沢城内で使われた昼夜それぞれを13等分する特殊な不定時法であったことがわかった。
