これまで、動機づけの研究分野では外発的動機づけと内発的動機づけは対立する概念として扱われることが多かった。また、両者の関係に注目したいくつかの研究も認知的評価理論にみられるように外発動機づけの内発的動機づけへの妨害的効果が強調されてきた。しかし、子どもたちについての日常的観察からもわかるように先生や両親からの賞賛や賞品の授与、あるいはきびしい競争に勝ち抜くといった類の外発的動機づけは子どもたちのコンピテンスを高場させる面もあわせもっているように思われる。すなわち、外発的動機づけ→コンピランスあるいは自信の高まり→内発的動機づけの形成というル-トも考えられる。教育的視点からはこの過程にもっと注目して、どのような場合に内発的動機づけが生起するのか明らかにする必要がある。そこで、次のような研究が実施され、一定の結果をえた。(1)技能学習(ピアノ,習字,珠算,水泳などの学習)過程の検討:技能学習の初期、中期、終期での内発的動機づけや外発的動機づけについて大学生を対象にして回顧させるやり方で質問紙法により検討した。結果としては練習初期の外発的動機づけとその後の内発的動機づけとの間に正の関係が認められた。(2)幼児の課題遂行における外的報酬の効果の検討:個別実験的方法により検討した。この結果、幼児が課題遂行に成功した場合、言語的賞賛だけでなく、外的報酬も与えることが内発的動機づけの高さの指標である課題へのPersistenceを高め挑戦的な課題選択に関係することが明らかにされた。(3)教室場面での教師の子どもに対する動機づけ:小学校教師を対象にして1時間程度の面接を実施し、子どもに対する動機づけの実態や信念を尋ねた。教師の大半は小学校の低学年では賞賛競争,賞品といった外発的動機づけが子どもの内発的動機づけを形成するのに意味があるとみていた。
