1.再開発地区について本年度は主として再開発地区である東京都荒川区汐入の調査結果を整理し、住民から得たインタビューの結果を分析することに費された。本年度は東京大学で同地区の調査に携っている助手・大学院数名と共に、10回にわたって汐入研究会を開催し次の成果を得た。(1)小規模長屋に住む住民たちの生活は路地に溢れるが、そのうち鉢植えが至る所に見られるのが特徴的である。このことは単なる趣味や流行ではなく、日本における居住の伝統との脈絡のなかで考えなくてはならない。この問題についての予備的考察を別項の通り発表した。(2)在来住宅から新しいRC造アパートに移住した人たちにとって新居はおおむね好評である。しかし地主層は床面積に余裕があり、余裕分を資産として運用する道がある一方、借家人層は面積・賃貸条件ともに満足しているとはいいがたい。この点、居住者の意見と生活の実態については今後さらに集約することが必要である。(3)今回の再開発に当って、従来築いてきた近隣関係はほぼ崩壊する。それに変る新しい共同体が構築されるか否かが今後の問題である。アパートの形式、共用部分のあり方など建築的解決の方法を探ることと併せて、今後長期的な観察と分析を続ける必要があろう。2.保存地区について本年度は宿根木にとくに目立った動きはなく、依然として空気が多く地区を活性化する手段が見出せないでいる。地区内の若年者でサービス業に転業しようとする動きはあるが、成功するか否かは他の住民たちの協力いかんにかかっている。町当局も整備と活性化の両立については解決の方途を見出しかねており、補助事業による数棟の住居の整備と復原に期待をかけている程度であった。
