1990年代における世界経済と地域主義に関する総合的研究として、ECのEU(ヨーロッパ連合)への発展、1994年1月1日における北米自由貿易協定の発効、および東アジア経済圏形成の動きを追跡し、それらの市場統合と相互関係の深化を実証し、理論化するよう努めた。前年度にも述べたように、われわれの研究ではこれら3地域を個別に分析するだけでなく、それらの相互依存関係を含めて、3者を比較対照し、それらが各々「ブロック化」するかどうかという視点から総合的に検討した。全体としては、EC(EU)=経済統合、北米=自由貿易圏、東アジア=市場による相互関係の深化という3地域主義パターンを再確認し、以下の観点から研究を進めた。1)ヨーロッパにおいては、マーストリヒト条約の批准とEUの発足のなかで、統合のより高い水準、すなわち通貨同盟への前進をめぐる問題点を理論的に押さえようとした。2)北米では、米、カナダ、メキシコによるNAFTAが発効するまでの各国内部での動き、とくにカナダにおける政争と米国でのクリントン政権による取扱いを追跡し、三国間における「補助協定」締結の経過を検討した。3)東アジアにおいては、中国、台湾、および香港を通してみられる急速な経済成長が日米関係および東アジア全体に及ぼしている影響を検討すると同時にAPECへの米国の攻勢の進展を確認した。

Research on integration of world economy and regionalism in the 1990s, development of EC (European Union), development of North American Free Trade Agreement on January 1, 1994, tracing of the dynamics of the formation of the East Asian Free Trade Agreement, and deepening of market integration and interrelationships In the previous year, the study was conducted on the basis of the analysis of the three regions individually, including the interdependence of the three regions, and the comparison of the three regions with each other.
