Second-storage systems which have very large capacity is essential for large image processing. Recently, hard-disk systems tends to be smaller and cheaper in spite of their high performance and reliability.Our research goal is to present the architecture of the high performance disk array, by utilizing small hard-disks, which is suitable for large image processing. Our proposed architecture employs the hierachical storage system in which tape devices are also combined in order to hold very large images, since it is not realistic that all large image data is resident on hard-disk drives.We constructed the RAID disk array system which consist of 16 data disk, one parity disk and one spare disk. Since each disk has 600MB capacity and 2.0MB / sec data transfer rate, this disk array system provides in total almost 10GB capacity and 30MB / sec data transfer rate. We attach this system to SUN work station by using specialized S-bus interface board, which is developed especially in order to support high bandwidth between the disk array and SUN Then, we combined 8mm tape archivers into our system and implemented a large image processing system to migrate image data in the hierarchical storage systems. At last, we applyed our system for large remote sensing image processing and confirmed efficiency of our architecture.
