Recently, the demand for accessing the database system through a high speed network such as FDDI,CDDI or ATM becomes larger. Already we have developed the global environment database system which consists of mass storages and online archivers for large satellite images. Now, it is necessary for our global environment database to provide an efficient access method through a high speed network, especially, ATM network.First, we considered a hierarchical file system which provides a temporal data access and transfer method of movie, and supports an efficient access through ATM network by designing a hierarchical transfer protocol between our file system and ATM drivers. Then, a special driver for ATM network was developed to allow a very large image access to the hierarchical file systems. The experiment of accessing a remote sensing data through ATM network has been done in order to clarify our system. The experimental results showed that our hierarchical file system and special ATM driver are effective for large global environment database system. The graphical user interface and the pattern matching mechanism for satellite image was also constructed on the hierarchical file system to provide high functional interface for remote users through ATM network, since it is also important for a large global environment database to satisfy users' needs such as easy retrieval, quick response from system and good navigation for retrieval. Thus, we proposed a hierarchical file system which can allow efficient accessing through high speed network, which is coming in rapidly, and constructed the experimental system. From the results, we confirmed that our prototype global environment database is an efficient platform for high speed network communication.
