当課題について資料集積が全くなされていなかったために、基礎的な資料収集から始めねばならなかった。作業は大別して三種を平行して行った。琉球処分の背景を確認すべく那覇市の沖縄央科編集所が編集し、活字化した記録類を調査した。同時に現在佐賀県鹿島市祐穂稲荷神社に保管される旧藩主・沖縄県初代県令であった鍋島直彬の蔵書と、同藩の藩儒であった谷口藍田の蔵書「藍田文庫」(両方未整理)の調査・複写撮影を行った。第三に、国立国会図書館鶏軒文庫・都立中央図書館など東京都内の各研究施設に蔵される明治初期漢詩文集と、当時内務郷であった伊藤博文関係資料の書誌学的調査を行った。調査の結果、明治十二年に沖縄県令に赴任した鍋島直彬以下の日本文官たちが新任地で営んだ文芸・学芸の活動を一層明らかにすることができるとともに、近代国家の黎明期において漢詩文という旧然の文学がいかに作り出されていたかを窺うことができた。
