项目摘要

まずElizabeth StoddardのThe MorgesonsやHarriet Beecher Stoweの作品など、Nationなどの雑誌でJamesが批評した女性作家による教養小説をもとに、女性の手による女性像を考察し、それらとHenry Jamesの書くアメリカン・ガ-ルを比較した。結果として、これらの女性作家達の描く女性像と異なり、Jamesのそれは悲観的であり、女性の自立については懐疑的であることが明確となった。今年度とくに詳細にわたって分析したThe Bostoniansで、Jamesは女主人公のVerenaを女権拡大運動にかかわらせることで、女性の生き方、男性との関係の本質を問題提示している。そしてVerenaが女権運動を捨て、Basilとの結婚を選ぶことで女性の自立が否定されていることは明らかである。またStoddardによって肯定的に描かれていた女性のセクシュアリティがこの作品においては、女性にとって致命的なものとされている。かといってVerenaの選んだ伝統的な生き方をJamesは必ずしも賢明なものとして賛美していない。結婚が幸福とは描かれていないのである。Basil Ransomの残酷性の強調がその一例である。こうして1850-60年代のたいていの女性作家達が賛美していたthe Cult True WomanhoodをもJamesは否定したといえよう。そしてJamesが女性に対してのみでなく、男性に対しても敵意をもっていたこと、つまり、当時のアメリカの男性性の定義、ジェンダーの状況に対して批評的であったとことも明確になった。今後はJamesが酷評したHelen Hunt Jacksonの長編など、女性の目から結婚をもっと現実的に、批判的にみた作品をとりあげ、Jamesの描くアメリカ女性像と比較する必要があるであろう。
