项目摘要

本年度は、James達がライバル視したことのある人気女性作家のひとりで、Jamesがその作品を書評で酷評したこともあったHelen Hunt Jacksonの"The Prince′s Little Sweetheart"をとりあげ、Jamesが描き続けた十九世紀アメリカのthe Cult of True Womanhood批判と比較した。"The Prince′s Little Sweetheart"とは、童話の「シンデレラ」の続編という形で書かれている。この作品には、いったん家庭にはいると女性は現実には舞踏会のような華々しい生活をおくるのではなく、外で戦闘に従事している王子様のために自己を犠牲にして家庭に閉じこもり、蜘蛛退治に象徴される家事にはげまなければならないという現実が提示されている。Jacksonは女性の結婚願望を強めた「シンデレラ」を利用することで結婚生活を理想化したthe Cult of True Womanhoodのイデオロギーを批判したといえる。つまりJamesが非現実的だと酷評したJacksonの方が、女性の立場だからこそJamesよりはっきりとジェンダーの現実を知ってそれを童話の形で象徴的に描いたのである。The Portrait of a LadyでJamesは疑問を投げかけ、批判しても、ジェンダーの変革までふれていない。Jacksonのこの作品は今までまったく注目されることがなかった。しかしKate Chopinより前に、しかも童話という形で、女性に犠牲を求める現状を訴えているという点で、大いに評価すべきだと思われる。また、JamesのThe Portrait of a Ladyの後に書かれたということも注目すべきであろう。彼の作品がそれだけ女性作家達に影響を与えたともいえるのではないか。今後は、The Portrait of a Lady以前のJacksonの作品との比較が必要である。またリアリズムという点でJamesと女性作家達が互いに与える影響を具体的作品にあたった研究する予定である。
