本研究では、コミュニケーションの直接性が自己表現のあり方、とりわけ自己開示、に及ぼす影響に着目した。研究Iでは、コミュニケーションの直接性を他者存在の有無による影響の程度としてとられ、自己開示の内容分析によって、その直接性の影響について検討した。ここでの直接性は、準構成的面接が対面条件で行われるか電話条件で行われるかによって操作された。各場面における被験者は、大学生女子10名であった。2名の同性の面接者が面接にあたった。面接内容は、全てテープに録音され、逐語録された。2名の評定者によって、全体の文節数、感情的発話の文節数、開示抵抗感などが調べられた。その結果、開示抵抗感への影響については、有無な差が認められなかったものの、対面条件よりも電話条件のほうが全体の発話に占める感情的な発話の割合が高かった。このことは、電話条件(直接性の低い条件)のほうが、感情的な発話がストレートな形で表出されやすいことを示唆している。研究IIでは、他者存在が及ぼす自己意識への影響と自己開示との関連について検討した。被験者は、内省条件(他者存在の影響の弱い条件)か評価条件(強い条件)のいずれかに配置された。各条件10名(男女5名)であった。その結果、開示時間も発話数も内面性の高い発話数も、内省条件のほうが有意に多かった。また、発言内容を分析したところ、内省条件のほうが、自己に対する否定的発言が顕著であった。次に、録音された自分の発話を聞き、改めてその内面性の程度や印象について評定させたところ、内省条件における開示抵抗感は開示直後では低かったが、テープ後では、開示抵抗感を高めて評定し直していた。男子のほうがテープ後では、自分の開示内容を否定的に捉え直す傾向が強かった。このことは、テープを聞いたことにより自己注目し自覚状態を高めた男子が、自分の内面的な自己開示に対して、理想の男性像とのズレを強く感じたためであったと解釈できる。
