高齢者世代と他の世代間の交流の実態を把握するために、以下の側面での測定項目の設定を行った。心配事や困り事がある時に相談にのる、いたわりや思いやりを示すといった情緒的交流の側面。病気になった時の世話やちょっとした手助けといった手段的交流の側面。また、それぞれの側面について、ポジティブな交流だけでなく、世話をやきすぎる負担になるといった、ネガティブな交流も把握できるように項目を設定した。加えて金銭面での相互援助の実態を、生活費、医療費、余暇活動費などの費目別に捕らえることにした。データの収集は、まず測定項目を開発する段階で、東京都内の老人福祉センター来所者を対象として、交流に関する項目を中心に調査を実施した。設定した交流の実態を把握するための項目は、概ね期待した回答を引き出すことができていたが、項目で捕らえられない交流の内容を尋ねたところ、さらに多様な交流の実態が明らかになってきた。しかしながら、すべての交流を把握するのは不可能なので、項目の取捨選択を行い、上記の側面を測定する項目を最終的に設定した。さらに、交流と属性や様々な要因との関連をみるために、都内在住の65歳以上の高齢者を対象にして、有効数が男性高齢者10ケースおよび女性高齢者10ケースの総計20ケースの調査を実施した。有効ケースの年齢分布は、61歳から81歳であった。結果の中で注目すべき知見としては、交流の頻度や量と生活満足度や主観的幸福感といったQOL関連の指標とは、単純に相関するものではないというもので、量が少ないながらも交流の質や内容によっては、QOLを高めるのに貢献していることがわかった。今後さらに分析を進めるともに、同じ測定項目を使用して、より大量のデータ収集を行う予定である。
