当初の計画では、平安時代前期(九・十世紀)の国家・王権と宗教との関係を究明する事を目的としたが、研究を進める過程で今一度律令国家のイデオロギー装置としての宗教の果たす役割、特にその王権擁護の機能について類型化を試み、明確な概念規定を行う必要が生じた。そこで、七世紀後半の天武・持統朝に新たな仏教・神祇との関係の構築が目指されて以来、八世紀中葉の天平年間に変質を遂げるまでの国家と宗教、とりわけ仏教との関係について再考し、初期国家仏教の特質を追究すると共に、王権自体の問題点を踏まえて天平年間の変質の意義を考察する事を試みた。その結果、初期国家仏教においては、仏教利用の目的が(1)具体的な利益を期待する側面と(2)観念的な効果を期待する側面に類別され、さらに(2)を目的とする国家の政策として、(イ)経典の論理に基づく思想的影響と(ロ)宗教的雰囲気による感情的影響を画策したものに類別されることが明らかになった。さらに、天平年間の変質の意義として、従来王権の背景に存した(1)皇孫思想と(2)天命思想の双方から、度重なる異変に自己の存在の危機を実感した聖武天皇が、鎭護国家の具体的な効果と共に、国分寺建立等による宗教的権威の獲得をもくろみ、これに皇后藤原光明子や皇太子阿倍内親王の置かれた立場の問題も相まって、結果皇室主導の大規模な仏教興隆政策が展開されたことを実証した。またその契機として行基の存在とその活動の性格に注目し、天皇の目指した宗教的君主としての方向性が如何なるところから導かれたものかを明らかにした。現在その成果を踏まえて、奈良末・平安初期の垣武朝から嵯峨朝にかけての王権と宗教の関係について、政治的・社会的観点からの研究を継続中である。

In the early Heian period (9th and 10th centuries), the original plan was to investigate the relationship between the state, the king and the religion, to clarify the purpose, to advance the research process, and to regulate the state, the king and the religion. In the second half of the 7th century, during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, the construction of the relationship between the state and the gods has been pointed out. Since the middle of the 8th century, the relationship between the state and the religion has been re-examined. The characteristics of the early state education have been investigated. The problems of the king himself have been investigated. The purpose of education utilization in the early stage of state education is (1) the expectation of concrete benefits,(2) the expectation of ideological results,(3) the purpose of state policy,(4) the influence of logic and thought,(5) the influence of emotion,(6) the influence of religion, and (7) the classification of drawing strategies. (1) The Emperor's grandson's thought and (2) The difference between the two sides of the destiny's thought and the importance of their own existence. The emperor's thought and the concrete results of protecting the country, the establishment of the Kokubunji Temple, etc., the acquisition of religious authority, the establishment of the Empress Fujiwara and the Crown Prince's position, etc. As a result, the royal-led large-scale education and prosperity policy was launched. The opportunity of the existence of the activity of the emperor's eyes, the direction of the emperor's eyes, the direction of the emperor's eyes, and the direction of the emperor's eyes. The achievements of the present era are as follows: the end of Nara, the beginning of Heian, the relationship between the king and religion, the political and social issues, and the study of the future.
