项目摘要

本年度は,研究計画に従い,平安前期の九世紀から十世紀の宗教関係史料を,六国史・大日本史料等の各史料から抽出し,史料カードを作成すると共に,データベースを作成する作業を実施した。これと並行して,奈良時代以前の律令国家・王権と神祇・仏教の関係について,従来の研究成果を踏まえて新たな視点より考察を試み,平安前期への展望を読みとることとしたが,特に従来看過されていた宗教施設の感覚的側面に着目した。即ち,これまで古墳に代わる存在として寺院の建立が意義付けられたが,律令国家の成文に伴い鎮護国家の功徳が強くイメージされるようになると,寺院自体の有する感覚的機能,具体的には,豪壮な伽藍を最新の建築技術と様式で建立することの意義について顧みられることが稀となり,専ら寺院の実践的機能.つまり僧尼がそこで生活し法会を修する場としての意義のみが注目を集め,これを主軸に寺院史の展開が論じられていた。その反省の上に立って,本研究では,伽藍建立の条件や,その背後に存する建立主体の意図を分析することを試み,寺院の伽藍は,律令国家並びに王権の宗教的権威を象徴するものであるとともに,国家・王権が特に重視した清浄的空間を現出する意図でもって建立されたこと,地方豪族の建立にかかる寺院は,律令制下に於いても自身のモニュメント的な意義を多分に含むものであったこと,平安初期の桓武・嵯峨朝ではかような感覚的意義を重視しなくなり,意図的に実践的機能を重視するようになった点に寺院史上の大きな転換点が見出されること,さらに嵯峨朝以降の段階になると,再び王権は宗教的権威の獲得を目指すようになり,御願寺の建立が増加したが,最早奈良時代以前の如き大規模な伽藍の建立はなされず,個人的な色彩の濃い小規模の寺院が多く建てられたこと等を究明した。
