本研究は、中世前期におけるドイツ民族の形成過程を、deutsch(mlat.theodiscus/teutonicus)という単語の語義の変遷を通して明らかにしようとするものであった。具体的には、東フランク王国を構成するフランク・バイエルン・アレマ-ネン・ザクセン等々の諸部族が、いかなる過程を経て“ドイツ人(Theodisci/Teutonici)"という超部族的概念の下に総称されるに至るのか、その歴史過程の解明が主要な課題となった。一年間の研究成果としてこれまで明らかになったのは、主として次の3点である。1)“ドイツ人"という民族呼称は、通説が主張するような自己命名の所産ではなく、むしろイタリア人による他者命名として創造された。2)それが“ドイツ"へともたらされたのは、10世紀の末から11世紀の初頭にかけての皇帝オット-3世のイタリア政策の経過においてであり、通説の主張よりも100年余り遅い。3)さらに、かかる民族呼称を底礎する民族意識の担い手となったのは、少なくとも当初の時点においては貴族・聖職者などの広範な支配階層ではなく、むしろオット-の周辺に集うごく限定された知識人であった。従来の歴史学にとって、オット-諸帝統治下のアルプス以北の王国に、「ドイツdeutsch」という性格付けを与えることは自明視されてきたのであるが、上記の成果はかかる理解に対して修正を迫るものと思われる。これらの点については、先頃札幌で開催された中世史研究者の私的セミナーにおいて報告を行い、目下論文にまとめるべく準備を進めている。なお、研究の過程で、「ドイツ王国regnum Teutonicorum」なる概念の出現過程についても、その分析の必要性を痛感した。今後の課題としたい。
