まず文法における語彙部門の位置付けを明らかにしておくために,先行研究のサーベイを行ったところ次の3つのアプローチに集約されることがわかった。1.全ての語形成を語彙部門で行う極端な語彙論の立場(cf.Di Sciullo & Williams(1987)),2.語は統語部門で句とパラレルに派生され,語彙部門は語彙目録のリストに過ぎないとする立場(cf.Sproat(1985)),3.語形成は基本的に語彙部門で行われるが統語部門や音韻部門でも可能であるとする立場(cf.Anderson(1982))。当初は第2のアプローチ,特にLieber(1992)を修正,発展さえようと試みたが,語形成特有の制約を認めない方向性にはかなりの無理があった。そこで,上記3つのアプローチを比較検討した結果,第3のそれに属する影山(1993)のモジュール形態論を採ることにした。これは,語彙部門だけでなく統語部門にも語形成を認め,それぞれに共通の形態理論が適用されるものである。このモデルを採用する理由は次の2点である,1.統合型言語のデータに基ずく他のアプローチの知見も踏まえ,膠着型言語である日本語の語形成データも詳細に観察した上で組立てられている点で優れている,2.語彙部門と統語彙構造が隔絶しておらずD構造で接触することを許すので,基本的な区別を保持しつつ両者における語形成の共通性を捉えられる。このことによって項構造の継承問題も自然なかたちで論じることができる。また,同一言語の語彙的語形成と統語的語形成とを体系的に比較できる点でもバランスのとれた分析が可能となる。今後は,膠着型言語のデータを基に形態構造と統語構造の両方に適用可能な(或いはパラメータ化された)形態理論が構築できるかどうかを検討する。その際,Xバ-等既存理論の中心概念である主要部を見直す。語彙部門で生成される句は存在するのか?,内項/外項の区別や主題役割(階層)を項構造の情報として規定すべきか?といった問題も考察してゆく。
