本研究は,「世界化」と「地方化」の相拮抗する現代の時代潮流に焦点をあて,それを「下から」,特に高度産業国家の国内地域構造の変容と各地域の適応模索とを国際比較し,その動態が生み出されるメカニズムの解明と,今後の地域社会の秩序形成モデルを展望するため,学際的な基礎学問分野としての「比較地域研究」(Comparative Local-Regional Studies)の構築を目指す「重点領域研究」を申請するための企画調査研究である。そのため,人文・社会諸科学の各分野および各地域の地域研究に取組んでいる研究者が幅広く参加し,従来,各専門分野別に,また各地域別に分かれて進められて来た地域研究の成果が相互に交流され,「世界化」と「地方化」の諸傾向が,各社会的機能領域において,どのような様相を示しているか,そして両者間のダイナミズムを作り出す要因は何かに関する仮説の設定,さらに,内外の個別具体的な地域を事例に,各地域間にどのような変差があり,その変差を作り出す要因は何かに関する仮説の設定を行った。その上で,現代の時代変化の性格と動態を総体的に捉え,将来を展望するために,また各国の各地域が新たな文化形成と社会・政治秩序の構築に向けて挑戦するために,従来の人文・社会諸科学の概念枠組にどのような改鋳が必要であるか,そしてどのような新たな概念枠組の考案が必要であるかの検討を行った。それらの作業を通じて,「重点領域研究」を進めるために必要な,内外の研究状況の把握,研究主題の明確化,研究方法の精緻化,個別・具体的なフィールドの候補選定,研究作業過程の計画,研究推進組織体制の整備,参加研究者の役割分担の調整,研究経費等の検討を行い,「科学研究費補助金「重点領域研究」平成8年度発足重点領域申請書」-申請領域名「世界化と地方化の展望-新たな比較地域研究の構築-」を作成し,申請を行った。
