本研究は、沖縄に伝統的に伝わる「シマ」(所によってはジマ)と呼ばれる相撲を社会人類学の方法論によって、相撲の技術やシールに対する独自の認識と相撲を支える組織の構造を明らかにすることであった。シマの技術とルールについては以下の点が明らかとなった。1.技術名称については、現在ではほとんど地域差が見られなかった。この理由としては、沖縄角力協会が中心となり地方支部の運営にも関与していることから、共通した技術用語が必要であったことによる。しかし、協会の活動が活発化するまでは、技術名称の地域差も確認された。2.ルールに関しては、共通した認識がもたれており、地域差を見出すことはできなかった。ただし、協会の発足後、経験的に認知されていたルールは、ある程度成文化されるとともに、試合時間などが新たに付け加えられた点に近代化の影響をみることができた。次に、相撲の組織については、以下の点が明らかとなった。1.沖縄角力協会が発足するのは、戦後間もなくの24、5年ころであった。2.沖縄角力協会は現在の沖縄相撲を運営する唯一の組織であり、祭りの中に組み込まれた相撲のイベントなどの運営にも携わっていた。3.沖縄角力協会は沖縄県全土に6つの支部を持ち、各支部の運営に対しても大きな影響を与えていた。
