本研究は、日本において現存する葬礼相撲の習俗を明らかにし、その類型を提示することを目的としていた。葬礼相撲は、基本的に人の死に際して相撲をとるという行為を指すが、それ以外にも、年忌や供養といった場面で取られる相撲もこれに属すると考えられる。以上のような理解に基づき、現在おこなわれている葬礼相撲の形態を分類すると、次に示す3類型の存在が明らかとなった。1. 新盆を迎えるに際して、相撲をとるという習俗がある。2. 地蔵供養の一部には、祖先供養として相撲を取る習俗がある。3. 草相撲において親方的な役割を果たしている人物が亡くなった時に、相撲をとるという習俗がある。さて、ここに示した3つのパターンは、その全てが、日本各地で見られるというのではなく、それぞれが、時代的、地域的制約を受けておこなわれている。そこで、1〜3に該当する地域を示すと、1と2は愛媛県南予地方、3は石川県の事例ということになる。そして、時代的には、1と2が現在でもその機能を残しながらおこなわれており、3が昭和の後半まで行われていたことが確認されている。もちろん、全国各地には、これ以外にも葬礼相撲の類型が存在してる可能性はあるが、それを明らかにするためには、さらなる事例の収集とその詳細な分析が必要となる。しかし、現時点では、以上に掲げた3類型が葬礼相撲として認定することが可能なのである。
