第1に、ケニアの中央州北部に位置するニェリ県、およびリフト・バレー州中部のライキピア県の高地湿潤地帯〜低地半乾燥地帯における、新規入植に伴う農地の垂直的展開と環境改変の現状を検討した。まず、対象地域の衛星データ(SPOT画像)を、1987年3月29日と1992年4月14日の2時点について入手し、これらを近赤外線領域を含む合成カラー画像として出力し、植生および農業的土地利用の現状と、その変化を概観した。平成6年8月には現地調査におもむき、平成5年度科学研究費補助金(奨励研究A:課題番号05780124)で購入・分析した同地域のLandsat画像データをも援用して、あらかじめ作成した土地被覆分類図を現地において検討した。これによって、衛星データによって分類された土地被覆の特徴を、植生および農業的土地利用の実態と関連させて把握することができた。今年度購入した2時点のSPOTデータは、ケニアが1980年代に入って経験した数度の干ばつ、および急激な経済的変化が、この地域の農業的土地利用にどのような変化をもたらしたのかを検討することを可能にするものであり、現地調査でえた知見をもとにして、リモート・センシングの手法を用いて、その変化を解析しているところである。第2に、比較検討のため、高地湿潤地帯から低地半乾燥地帯にかけての垂直的農地利用や経済的環境の激変という点で同条件を備えた、タンザニア北東部高地のLandsatデータ(1984年12月17日)を入手し、同様の分析に着手した。第3に、現地調査で収集した資料、およびアジア経済研究所所蔵資料を用いて、1980年代の経済環境激変のもとでのタンザニアの工業の現状と変化を検討した。とくに、これまで検討されることのなかった個々の工業事業所の雇用規模の変化に注目し、農外就労機会として小農世帯にとって重要なタンザニア工業の動態を全国的に把握した。

Review of the current situation of environmental change in the northern part of Central Prefecture in the highlands wet zone to the lowlands semi-dry zone with new planting and vertical expansion of cultivated land.
