本研究では、まず、山口県山口市の一つの公立中学校より研究協力の承諾を得て、中学2年生のクラスを一つ選定し、その数学の授業を研究対象とした。図形の論証に関わる授業に焦点をあて、1994年10月中旬より1995年3月中旬まで、担当の数学教師と共同して授業内で教授実験を行なった。授業は、観察日誌への記載およびビデオカメラとテープレコーダによって記録された。担当教師およびクラスの生徒に対して必要に応じてインタビューを実施し、それはテープレコーダ等によって記録した。また、授業で用いられた教材、テスト、生徒の答案の写し等も収集した。収集されたデータのデータベース化と分析の作業は現在も進行中である。現時点で得られている暫定的成果のうち、主なものは以下の通りである。1.中学2年数学の図形領域で論証が生徒にとって最も困難な内容であり、それまでに特に数量に関する領域の学習で得た生徒達の学習習慣では対応できない場面が多い。2.論証の教授・学習過程には新しい文化への同化過程との類似がみられ、文化人類学の研究がこの過程の分析に示唆的である。また、証明の記述には、書きコトバが用いられており、書きコトバに関するヴィゴツキ-の研究がこの点の分析に示唆的である。3.論証の内面化過程に関わるものとして、教師の説明、教師と生徒の間の議論、教師の様々な手立て、生徒同士の議論等がある。それらがお互いに関係し合いながら、内面化は進む。4.論証は、それが置かれている教授・学習過程の脈絡の中で固有の意味を持ち、その脈絡から切り離して子どもの書いた論証を十分理解することは困難である。5.論証の意義に対する子どもの理解は、説明や論証の活動を通じて徐々に深められるものであり、論証の導入段階で十分なものを子どもに求めることは困難である。定義と定理、仮定と結論等の意義に関しても、操作的理解が先立ち、概念的理解を初めに求めることは困難である。
