第2次大戦期以降、南アフリカ社会は伝統的農村の崩壊と急激な都市化を経験した。アパルトヘイト体制の崩壊の原因を理解するためには、都市部での熟練労働力不足と農村部の偽装失業の進展という労働市場の深刻なミスマッチ状態を念頭におきつつ、現代南アフリカの政治経済の構造変化を多人種社会の歴史的形成プロセスのなかに位置づけていく作業が不可欠である。本年度は、こうした問題意識を具体的な研究成果にまとめあげるための基盤整備を行うとともに、いくつかの萌芽的な研究成果を発表することができた。本年度は、黒人労働力問題と工業化を重要なトピックとする南アフリカ史の歴史学方法論論争について、論文「南アフリカの歴史を読む-リベラル・ラディカル論争をこえて」(L・トンプソン著『南アフリカの歴史』明石書店、近刊、所収)を執筆するとともに、黒人労働力移動の歴史的展開について、岡倉登志編『アフリカ史を学ぶ人のために』(世界思想社、近刊)の最終章「現代のアフリカ-南アフリカ」を執筆した。前者は、南アフリカの歴史研究において、アフリカニスト的視点にもとづく社会史や農村史の実証研究が重要な意味をもちつつあることを明らかにする論文であり、後者は、農村から都市への黒人労働力の移動を管理するにあたって、歴代の白人政権がソフトな政策とハードな政策を柔軟に使い分けつつ、問題の表面化を先送りし続けてきたことを歴史的に実証した論文である。どちらも、この分野においてはパイオニア的な意義をもつ研究成果だと自負している。今後は、都市と農村の分極化の矛盾を歴史的に位置づける研究をふまえて、未来の南アフリカの開発戦略の選択肢について積極的に論じていきたいと考える。その研究成果は、『南アフリカ-ポスト・アパルトヘイトのために(仮題)』として、岩波書店より1997年5月に刊行される予定となっている。
