「表無表章」は慈恩大師基の『大乗法苑義林章』の一部分である。古来戒律思想の中核をなす戒体及び中国の戒律の実際を説くものとして重要視され、平安初期には秋篠寺善珠によって注釈書である『表無表章義鏡』が書かれた。また鎌倉初期の覚盛も戒律復興において自誓受戒と通受の根拠として重視した。叡尊も自伝の『感身学正記』の中で本書の講読に何度も触れている。本研究では、この「表無表章」に焦点を絞り研究を試みた。まず注釈学的研究の一環として「表無表章」に引用される経論の引用典拠を調べた。基は玄奘の弟子であり、玄奘の手になる新訳の『瑜伽師地論』『倶舎論』の引用が多いことを確認した。この作業には多大な時間を要したが、調べた引用典拠の総覧は、近い将来に発表する予定である。また大正大蔵経所収本を底本とし卍続蔵経所収本との比較を行い、ついでその他の版本、写本(調査に赴いた東大寺図書館の所蔵の鎌倉期写本の抄本等)との比較校訂の作業を進め、現在も継続中である(旅費その他の費用)。また作業の過程で、本書のデータベース化の必要を感じ、本書の全文をパソコンのデータとして入力した。この時、研究補助として若手の研究者の助力を仰いだ(謝金)。また本書の読解は、難解な部分が多かったので、専門分野の先生に指導を仰ぐと共に(専門的知識の提供)関連する図書、論文資料等を蒐集し(設備備品費その他の費用)参考とした。さらに既存の目録や訪問した図書館等の資料から本書に対する日本で製作された注釈書の一覧を作成中である。善珠の『義鏡』の読解の作業は、引用典拠を調べつつ現在継続中である。なお、本研究の成果と間接的に関連する論文として「覚盛の戒律思想-通受を中心として-」を『勝呂信静先生古希記念論文集』(平成七年末刊行予定)に投稿したことを付記しておく。
