项目摘要

毛利家・三奈木黒田家を中心に近世中期西国諸藩の文芸資料を収集する本研究は、予想以上の広がりを見せ、大名の文芸活動の多彩な側面を多く発見することが出来た。調査は前記の二家に始まり、筑後柳川の立花家、肥前平戸の松浦家等に及んだ。更に、偶然に採訪した出羽庄内藩酒井家の文庫を調査したところ、酒井忠徳と豊前中津の奥平大膳大夫とが入魂の間柄で、他に越後長岡藩主牧野忠精等も含めた濃密な文化圏を形成していたことが実証された。即ち、酒井・奥平・牧野のように幕府の中枢に位置する譜代大名同士が、大名のなかでも特に強烈にエリート意識に支えられて、領国の遠近など関係なく江戸藩邸相互の連絡を密にして和歌に興じるのと対照的に、西国の外様諸藩の多くが個別の文化圏を強固に固めて独自の発展を見るというように、大名の文芸にも様々なレベルとタイプが見られることを確認できたのは意義深い。その検証のために、九州・山口に止まらない遠隔地への出張を必要とした。収集した資料のうち特筆すべきは、鶴岡致道博物館所蔵酒井忠徳宛日野資枝書簡約二百通、九州大学九州文化史研究施設所蔵冷泉為村添削黒田一誠詠草、柳川古文書館所蔵立花家歌合などである。幕末の柳川藩の歌壇の充実は全国的に見ても突出している。「旧華族家史料所在調査報告書」(学習院大学史料館)の入手も有益であった。
