12-16世紀に英語及びラテン語で記された死後世界の幻視文学を研究し、以下の結果を得た。12世紀にラテン語で製作され、16世紀に至るまで広く読まれ続けた「死後世界の訪問記」に関して、原典のラテン語版と14-15世紀に作成された英語版を比較した。その結果、12世紀の原典においては、煉獄の教義が未だ不完全にしか反映されてはいないが、しかし後世の英語版においては、煉獄(Purgatory)という語句が頻繁に使用され、またその記述もが地獄のそれと明確に区別されるようになっていることが看取された。同一作品の翻訳でありながら、14-15世紀の版は、教義の発展に対応して原典を修正していると言える。また英語の宗教文学全般のなかでは、14世紀以降に製作されたテクストのなかに、天国と地獄のみならず煉獄に関するかなり長く詳しい解説が登場してくる。しかし幻視文学の研究をふまえてそうした記述を検討すると、12世紀のラテン語の作品にみられた描写やモチーフを模倣している部分が多く見出された。中世後期の宗教美術にも、こうした独自性の欠如は認められた。写本の細密画や教会の祭壇画に登場する煉獄の描写には、地獄のそれと一見区別のつかぬものも多い。11-12世紀に確立した煉獄の教義は、14世紀以降には英語の説教・教訓文学を通じて、広く一般信徒に知られるようになった。しかし煉獄がその役割上、天国と地獄のと両面を併せ持っているため、文学・美術作品においてはその描写上の特徴が明確になりにくく、独自性を確立することなく推移していたと考えられる。なお本研究によって一応の完成を見た中世イングランドの宗教文学における死生観に関する研究は、『中世英詩における死と死後世界-煉獄の思想の受容に関する一考察』と題する英文の著作として刊行すべく、原稿を完成させた。現在英国の出版社と出版交渉中である。

12-16 The following results were obtained from the study of the literature of vision in the world after death.
