本年度は、古代ローマにおける文法研究の性格を明らかにすることを目標に、その基礎的研究を行った。一口に古代ローマの文法研究と言っても、各文法家によってその記述の仕方は多様であるが、本年は、その代表的文法家Marcus Terentius Varroの文法論の考察を重点的に行った。具体的には、まず、Harvard University Press出版のテキストを用い、Varroの言語観、文法観が表れている第8巻から精読および翻訳を開始した。Varro邦訳は未だ存在しないため、翻訳完成の暁には、出版を希望している。それと平行して、Packard Humanities Instituteから公にされているラテン語のデータベース(PHI♯5.3)とそのCD-ROM検索ソフトを入手し、Varroの言語論の中で、格別に重要な役割を果たしていると考えられるanalogia(規則性)とanomalia(不規則性)という概念が、ラテン語資料においてどのような使われ方をしているかの吟味をした。検索の結果、analogiaはanomaliaに比べ出現頻度が8倍以上であること、いずれの語もVarroにおいて最も頻繁に用いられていること、Varro以外の著作に見られる用法もVarroからの引用が多いことなどが判明した。あわせて、時間、相、語形変化、文法上の性などに関わる用語の調査もラテン語資料全般にわたって行った。その文脈の検討は、現在進行中であり、未だ完了していない。さらに、Varroに影響を与えたと考えられているEpicurusとの関係を解明するため、Epicurusの原子論についても調査も行ったが、これはまだ緒についたばかりである。
