本研究は、当初、19世紀中葉フランスにおける社会変動の実態・特徴を把握すべく、「労働政策」に着目することを予定していた。しかし研究の開始早々当時の「社会変動」をいかに理解するかに関して混乱が生じた。そのため、この問題について最も有効な分析視角を提供していると思われる「歴史社会学」の研究成果に学ぶべく、合衆国における上級教科書(スコチポル編「歴史社会学の構想と戦略」)の翻訳を開始した。訳業は1994年12月に終了し、訳書は1995年4月に刊行の予定である(木鐸社刊)。その過程で理解されたことは、19世紀の社会変動には[1]身分制社会から解放された個人が社会的に上昇してゆく、[2]上昇困難な賃金労働者が析出される、という2種類のものがある、ということであった。では我が国歴史学界ではこの問題はいかに取り扱われているのだろうか。本研究は次にこの問題に取り組んだ。その結果、1945年以降の歴史研究に関しては、この2つの社会変動の存在は認識されていたものの、両者の関連如何は明示的な焦点とはならなかったことが判明した。この研究の成果は前掲訳書「解題」および“Where Have All the Revolutions Gone?"(Bollettino del 19 Secolo,Napoli,forthcoming)として公表される予定である。以上の作業をふまえ、次に19世紀中葉フランスを代表する2人の政治家ギゾ-とティエールの社会変動観の検討を開始した。この作業は現在のところ未完であるが、当時の社会構造の階統秩序の原理としては「能力」と「財力」とがあり、どちらが採用されるかが労働政策に影響するのではないかとの見通しを得るにいたった。この点については今後さらに検討を進め、公表を期したい。
