交付申請書の「研究の目的」および「本年度の研究実施計画」に従って,今年度は下記のように研究をすすめてきた。第一に,文献および史料の収集・整理と文献目録の作成。研究遂行上必要な未入手の文献・史料類が相当あったので,各大学の図書館に調査・閲覧に赴き,また積極的に文献購入につとめた。雑誌論文についてはやはり大学等の図書館で参照したほかに,日本で閲覧・参照困難な地方史関係の雑誌論文については,大英図書館に複写送付を依頼した。その結果,一般的な二次文献(研究対象の時期の同時代人の筆によるものもふくむ)の目録と,イギリスの州ごとのエンクロージャー文献目録の両方をほぼ完成することができ,今後の研究の基礎資料として大いに活用できるものと思う。史料は,地租査定簿を中心に整理・分析をおこなったが,他のエンクロージャー関係史料についても,研究テーマごと分類・整理をほぼ終えることができた。第二に研究成果の公表について。今年度は上記の地租査定簿の分析によって,エンクロージャーによる経済的影響の根幹をなす各土地所有者の土地処分(交換・売買・相続等)の実体を観察した論文を発表した(論文はまもなく刊行される予定)。そこにおいては,エンクロージャーの前後に土地の所有者の頻繁な入れ替わりがあったことが明らかになり,しばしば一般的なかたちで指摘されていたエンクロージャーの土地所有への甚大な影響が,具体的な事例を通じて証明されたといえよう。しかし,工業化期ヨーロッパ,あるいはナポレオン戦争期イギリスという大きな歴史的枠組みの中で議会エンクロージャーが実施されたことの意味を再考する仕事は,来年以降に残された。残る史料分析の成果の発表とともに,今後着実にその作業をすすめてゆきたい。
