A field research entitled "Biosystematics on the Alpine Flora of the Tien Shan Mountains" was carried out in cooperation with the Science Academies of Russia, Kazakhstan and Kirghistan from 9 July to 21 August, 1995.The purposes of this program were (1) to collect samples, especially of Ranunculaceae and Compositae, for the analyzes of chromosome, DNA sequences and flavonoids, (2) to collect speciments of seed plants, ferns and bryophytes for the taxonomic and floristic studies and (3) to collect the data for the analysis of alpine vegetation.The area investigated included the Dzhungarsky Alatau, the Zailisky Alatau, the Tereskey Alatau, the Central Tien Shan, the Kirghisky, the Alaisky and the Za Alaisky Ranges.We have collected more than 7,000 herbarium specimens.Among them very important collections were Aconitum alatavicum and A.soongoricum from the Dzhungarsky Alatau, A.nemorum from the Zailisky Alatau, A.karacolicum from the Kirghisky Range and A.zeravschanicum from the Alaisky Range for the Ranunculaceae.Also very interesting phytogeographically and taxonomically were Saussurea gnaphalodes and S.involucrata from Kazakhstan fro Compositae.We could get many samples including Aconitum, Cirsium, Saussurea, etc.for the analyzes of DNA sequences and flavonoids.Alpine meadows and subalpine forests were studied based on 127 records by the method of ZM school of phytosociology.About 900 specimens of bryophytes were collected from the investigated area.Two Russian taxonomists were invited to Japan to examine herbarium specimens preserved in the Herbarium of Department of Botany, National Science Museum, Tokyo (TNS) in March 1996.
