The concept of vibration control has been spread throughout civil engineering field, while many of them are just imported from other field of technology such as control engineering and mechanical engineering. The main objective of this study is, therefore, to establish an original concept of controlfor vibration problems in civil engineering structures, that is, earthquake-, wind- and traffic-induced vibrations. Starting from characterizing their vibration and control problems including the extemal disturbances and the response evaluation, several types of control are studied to compare their control performance. The contents of the present study are summarized as follows.1.Control of Earthquake-lnduced Vibration : The design concept of control for elevated highway bridges were first discussed emphasizing on the importance of system design. Some active control scheme were then studied by taking into account of the characteristics of earthquake and structure.2.Control of Wind-Induced Vibration : The modeling of wind forces for the control design were first discussed and methods for evaluation of unsteady aerodynamic forces as well as nonstationary qusty wind forces were proposed. Several control schemes for flutterin long-span suspension bridges and for gust responses in high-rise buildings were also studied.3.Control of Traffic-Induced Vibration : The control of vehicle-induced vibration in highway bridges, that of traffic-induced noise in viaducts, and that of pedestrian-induced vibration in stress ribbon bridges were studied analytically as well as experimentally.4.An experimental system for studying control periormance has been established.
