1.研究目的:1991年8月に北京で開催された第13回国際第四紀学連合(INQUA)で,更新世の年代区分に関する小委員会(Subcommission on Major Subdivision of the Pleistocene)が発足し,いくつかの候補地について模式セクションとして妥当がどうかを検討することになった.研究代表者の熊井久雄はこの小委員会の副委員長として,千葉県房総半島に露出する上総層群の中に下部・中部更新統の境界を設定することを提案した.この研究ではこの国際模式地候補地の層序を確定し,国際模式地としての条件をそろえることが主目的であり,そのために岩相層序や生層序,古地磁気層序等の各専門分野の研究者の研究を総合する必要がある.研究計画とその成果:上述の目的にそって計画された研究の成果は,6月15・16日のシンポジュウムで研究協力者の参加も得て集約され,8月にベルリンで開催された第14回国際第四紀学連合の研究会で提案された.千葉房総セクション以外にイタリアから2ケ所,ニュージーランドから1ケ所候補地が提案され,激しい論議の果てにその決定を次回の委員会まで持ち越した.その結果を踏まえて,帰国後不足する試・資料を各分担者が補足し,11月16日に再びシンポジュームを開催して総合化に努めた.またこのおりに,この総合研究Bの成果報告書の執筆分担を決め,英文のプロポーザルとすることにした.研究計画に沿っての成果は,(1)資料収集では過去の研究成果を集めて,採用できるものは総合柱状図の中に反映した.(2)補足研究では,主として境界を挟む層準での有孔虫化石の研究と古地磁気層序の再検討を研究協力者の協力を得て行なった.(3)報告書作成は英文のプロポーザルを作成したので,これをINQUA小委員会のメンバーに発送して理解を得ることにした.

1. Purpose: The 13th International Quaternary Association (INQUA) was established in Beijing in August 1991, and the Subcommission on Major Subdivision of the Pleistocene chronology was established. Kumai, Vice Chairman of the Research Committee, proposed the establishment of the upper and lower parts of the Chiba Peninsula. This study is necessary for the researchers to integrate the research of lithofacies sequence, biogenic sequence and paleomagnetic sequence into the study of the sequence of candidate sites of the International Model.
