IGBPのコアプロジェクトのひとつであるGCTE(地球変化と陸域生態系)を推進すること,および,わが国のイニシアティブにより提案され採択されたGCTEコアリサーチTEMA(モンスーンアジア陸域生態系に及ぼす地球変化のインパクト)の実施計画を策定しこれを推進することを目的に以下の調査研究を行った.(1)文部省・農林水産省・環境庁・科学技術庁等の研究機関で実施されえちる地球変化と陸域生態系に係わる研究の現状を調査した.(2)地球変化が陸域生態系に与える影響および陸域生態系の変化が地球環境にフィードバックする機構を明らかにするための新しい研究方法・研究課題を検討した.(3)TEMA研究推進A」,「国際学術研究」を企画した.(4)平成8年度発足の環境庁地球環境研究総合推進費による研究「湿潤熱帯山岳における森林植生帯閾値と地球温暖化のインパクト評価」「大面積長期観測林を用いた温暖化が森林の自律機能に及ぼす影響」を計画組織した.(5)平成7年8月日本生態学会大会シンポジウム「森林生態系のモデリング-ギャップダイナミックスからグローバルチェンジへ」「葉群・樹冠・林冠-構造の自律形成過程」を開催した.平成8年3月日本生態学会大会シンポジウム「地球変化と生態系の生理学」を企画した.(6)平成8年5月北京で開催予定の国際シンポジウム「地球変化と生物多様性に関するトランセクト研究」参加準備行った.(7)平成7年1月森林総合研究所で「熱帯山岳林生態系-キナバル山」を開催した.(8)平成8年2月の日本学術会議IGBPシンポジウムに参加し,GCTE小委員会を開催した.(9)TEMAの一環として屋久島・キナバルで進行している研究の推進・調整を図った.(10)オランダのKluwerから「Global Change and Terrestial Ecosystems in Monsoon Asia」を出版した.(11)GCTE-SSCとの連絡を密にし,国際対応を図った.
