地球環境の変化は生物個体・群集・生態系にいかなる影響を及ぼすか、また、生態系は地球環境にいかにフィ-ドバックするか。今日、生態学がこれらの間に科学的根拠をもって答えることは極めて重要である。それは、生態系の成立と維持の機構をグロ-バルな視点から明らかにしていくことにほかならず、生態学の基礎理論の一層の発展をはかってはじめて可能になる。そのためには生態学分野で大型研究を組織し、研究の活性心をはかっていかなければならない。本総合研究(B)は、このような問題意識のもとに、重点領域研究を複数立案することを目的にして組織された。第1回全体会議を平成3年6月29日、東京大学理学部植物学教室で開催した。諸報告のあと、本研究の基本方針と、わが国の生態学の現状について議論した。生態学分野で大型の研究として重点領域研究を組織する重要性があらためて確認され、つぎの4題について具体的に検討を進めることになった。(1)地球環境変化と陸上生態系、(2)DNAフィンガ-プリント、(3)絶減回避の集団生物学と総合保会、(4)海洋における流れと海産動物の幼稚存分散・滞留・回帰と再生産過程。各領域について計画責任者を決定し、責任者が中心になり、班員以外の参加も得て、7ー12月に個別に計画立案会議をもち、検討を加えた。以上4題とは別に検討されていた(5)微生物生態学領域も加え、検討結果は平成4月1月7日ー8日、東京本郷学士会館分館で開催された第2回全体会議で報告され、審議された。平成5年度発足の重点領域研究としては(1)生物圏扶養能力と地球環境変化、(2)生物の社会進化:血緑・性および選択機構を申請することになった。わが国の生態学の現状を調査し、問題点を抽出した。以上の研究成果を報告書にまとめた。
