1 Polymerization Reaction in Monolayr FilmFilms of hexatriacontadiyne (HTDY,C_<16>H_<33> C=CC=CC_<16>H_<33>) and dotoriacontatetrayne (DTTY,HC=CC_<12>H_<24> C=CC=C-C_<12>H_<24>HC=C) were prepared by vapor deposition onto a graphite cleavage plane held at 213 K.The process of the reaction in the films induced by irradiation with ultraviolet light was monitored by Penning ionization electron spectroscopy (PIES). The following findings were made.(1) On the graphite plane at 213 K molecular chains are oriented parallel to the substrate.(2) Polymerization reaction proceed among molecules by UV irradiation. For HTDY the two triple bonds at the center of the molecule are involved in the reaction, where for DTTY the four triple bonds at the center and the ends of the molecule take part in the reaction.(3) The monolayr molecular sheet (or atomic cloth) is formed on the substrate as a result of the polymerization reaction.2 Observation of Reaction in Two Dimensional Space by Metastable Electron … More Emission Microscope(1) In order to probe the molecular diffusion and reaction sensitively, the Penning ionization electron spectrum of the surface in the local region and the energy-filtered image were observed. The former provides information on the molecular orientation and the electronic state in the local region of the surface, whereas the latter enables us to map the distribution of the molecular orientation at the surface. The observation of the energy-filtered image was carried out for the first time in this study.(2) The molecular diffusion and the reaction of phthalocyanines were studied on cleavage planes of graphite and MoS_2 as well as on a Si single crystal surface. The following findings were made : (a) On graphite molecules diffuse rapidly and orient with their molecular planes parallel to the substrate plane. (b) On MoS_2 molecules diffuse slowly and orient parallel to the substrate as in the case of (a) upon heating the substrate.
