For the purpose of characterizing slurry suspension applied in fine ceramics shaping process, developed has been an evaluation technique, centrifugal consolidation method, in which the mechanical properties of slurry are measured methodically by controlling the centrifugal effect. It has been demonstrated by performing experiments on slip-casting and die-press compaction under the various conditions of slurry preparation, that the centrifugal consolidation method is available for designing characteristics of slurry in order to control microstructures in green compacts. On the basis of the experimental results, an unique apparatus has been designed and constructed, which measures time changes in balancing moment stemming from the centrifugal consolidation of particles. The slurry with high solids content is readily forced to form a particle network structure at the threshold, the formation mechanism of which originates in a slight dehydration of slurry. The critical solids content for th … More e network structure has been found to be as low as several vol%. It is demonstrated that it exists a relation between the centrifugal consolidation stress and the packing fraction, and that t0his relation can be interpreted to characterize the mechanical strength of the formed network structure, on which the solids content and the degree of flocculation exert a significant influence. It is also shown that the formation mechanism of microstructure in slip-casting process should be characterized by the transient behavior of filtrate and that the agglomerate structure, stemming directly from the interparticle forces between particles, significantly exerts an influence on the homogeneity of the formed green compacts.Characteristic transient behavior of compaction process for spray-dried granules, have been investigated by using the compaction and stress-relaxation technique. Attention has been paid to the microstructure of granules as well as slurry characteristics, in order to identify the main factor governing the formation mechanism of granules. It is shown that the shape forming process is reasonably explained with the shrinkage process of spray-dried droplets, characteristics of which are methodically evaluated by applying the centrifugal consolidation method.
