We have obtained the following research results ;1)Traditional non-covalent type molecular imprinting technique was found to be inapplicable to the molecular imprinting for sugars due to their poor solubility in common organic solvents.2)We gave developed novel surface imprinting technique for the sugars where template, sugar was added with functional monomers to form new recognition site on the base particles. Those polymer showed specific recognition towards directions of hydroxyl groups at 3,4, and 6 positions of the sugars.3)We proved that those polymers are able to recognize sugar derivatives in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and much higher recognition ability was observed in adsorption experiment for sugars in aqueous solution.4)We have developed another molecular imprinting method for sugars. In this method, we prepared polymer having functional group, first. Then, sugars were adsorbed onto the polymer and heat treatment was performed.5)We utilized methacrylic acid as the functional monomer with ethylene dimethacrylate as cross-linking agents and methanol dissolving a sugar derivative to prepare "pre"-polymer. After the polymerization, and removal of methanol, we applied temperature (up to 200゚C for 30 min) to the polymer. Through this heat treatment, specific molecular recognition ability towards sugars was greatly improved.6)Although traditional molecular imprinting technique was not effective for sugars, newly invented imprinting methods, namely surface imprinting heat imprinting showed much better molecular recognition abilities. These procedures are relatively simple and easy to use.
