Propagation and Acceptance of Protestantism in Meiji Period Kyushu

Congregationalist came to Kyushu from Kyoto Station.3 Evan elical works by those Protestant groups concentrated to the main cities of Kyushu such as Kumamota, Kagoshima and Fukuoka. Because, compared with rural areas, urban areasare more populated and relatively opened to new religious system. In their works, they had a tendencyto found schools, mainly teaching English, as a aid of their evangelization, some of which exist even today.4 It can be obviously observed in Meiji Period Kyushu that a chracteristic of Protestantism in Japan was a religion of the intellectual.
