The purpose of this study is to examine the development of early childhood education reforms in the contemporary USA, from the view point of the influences of the activities of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). As the reforms in the USA have various aspects, therefore, jn this paper, four aspects are picked up as follows.(1)philosophical basis of early childhood education reform, (2)contents and methods of early childhood education, (3)early childhood education administration, (4)systems of early childhood educators.In this paper, firstly, it is dealt with the meanings of taking notice of NAEYC's activities for the study of early childhood education reforms in the US, and secondly, it is discussed that the NAEYC's activities today, classified ten functions, influence upon the various aspects of the reforms. And last, as the concrete examples of influences of NAEYC, the following matters are referred.(a)mission and philosophy of NAEYC, and (b)the point of view concerning "early childhood" and "early childhood education and care", related to the above aspect of (1),(c)conceptualizing of "developmental appropriateness" and making out of curriculum guidelines for young children, and (d)the foundation of accreditation system for early childhood programs, related to the above aspect of (2), and also, (d)accreditation system is related to the early childhood education administration, the above (3) aspect,(e)NAEYC's reform plans concerning early childhood profession, related to the above aspect of (4).In this study, we can grasp that NAEYC has been lead the early childhood education reforms in the USA in the various aspects like formulation of the philosophy of early childhood education, policy-making and quality improvement of early childhood education, etc., based on the significant investigations and discussions, and that the NAEYC's activities have been carried out as a grass-roots movement involved in various people at large.
