本研究は、16世紀末から17世紀中期にかけて、城下町の外港として計画的に成立した多くの港町に形成された均質性・開放性・連続性に彩られた都市空間こそ、中世都市を解体・純化・再編して近世経済社会が最終的な到達点として生み出した都市空間、すなわち市場経済の成立を通して近代経済社会への連続的な移行を可能とした都市空間と見なせることを、中近世移行期における港町の空間・社会構造の把握を通して、実証的に明らかにすることを目的としている。平成7、8年度の研究では、中近世移行期における港町全体の都市空間の展開について、中世における海や川に向かう求心構造の格差のある町割から、近世における海や川と並行する整然とした均質な町割への展開が読み取れることを明らかにした。平成9年度は、こうした展開を促した要因を明らかにするため、平成8年度に調査を行った小保・榎津に加え、中世起源の港町で近世港町に移行した港町を再び取り上げ、瀬戸内海沿岸に成立した広島藩の尾道、太平洋沿岸に成立した水戸藩の那珂湊、近世城下町に転じた港町である敦賀、小浜、大津について、未収集の文献史料・絵画史料・地図資料などの収集を試みた。これらの資史料に基づいて、尾道、敦賀、小浜、那珂湊、小保・榎津について地割レベルの都市復元図を作成し、中近世の交易形態を扱った既往研究を参照しつつ詳細に検討を試みた結果、問や問丸などの港湾管理者によって水際空間が一元的に管理され、そこから陸に向かって延びる街道沿いに商人宿が建ち並んだ求心構造の中世港町に対し、近世ではこれら問や問丸の解体に伴って船着場の解放が進み、自由かつ平等に水際線にアクセス可能で、市場原理の介在が可能で、交易の自由化と分業化を保証する合理的な都市空間として、分業化を果たした回船問屋が海や川に平行な街路に沿って建ち並ぶ均質構造の近世港町が成立したとの見通しを得ることができた。

A reasonable urban space is possible through the development of land, freedom, equality, water lines, market principles, liberalization and segregation of trade. The division of the industry is the result of the return of the ship to the house. The parallel street of the sea and the river is built along the road. The homogeneous structure of the modern port town is established.
