The effects of warm or cold (8w) acclimation and reacclimation (cold, 4w : warm, 4w) on the intracellular ion transport, lipid metabolism and heat production of the brown adipose tissue cells were studied. The cells were investigated by electron probe X-ray microanalysis and organelles by the patch clamp technique. The high voltage electron micrographs of the cells of cold acclimated rats revealed mitochondrial swelling and a decrease and/or deformation of lipid droplets of tissue cells. X-ray microanalysis of the mitochondria of the cold acclimated cells showed lower K and Cl, and higher Ca concentrations than those of the warm acclimated ones. The Ca of the reacclimated rat decreased to the level of the warm acclimated rat. The reconstituted membrane of the organelle was investigated by patch clamp to measure the voltage and-or H+ sensitive currents during cold acclimation. The experiments revealed the presence of a small and a relatively large conductance that correspond to the Cl-channel and the Ca2+dependent K+channel in the inner membrane of the organelle of the cells during cold acclimation.
