主な研究成果は次の3個である。1.ソフトウェア開発者が計算機を使用する作業を観察するためのシステム開発者がワークステーションを使用してソフトウェアの設計、コーディング、テスト、デバッグなどを行なう作業を、別室より観察する環境を整備した。具体的には、キーボードやマウスによる入力の全てと、開発者の映像とを送受信し、記録するシステムを構築した。2.開発者のデバッグ作業のモデルと、デバッグ能力の測定システム構築した観察システムを用いて開発者のデバッグ作業を観察・分析することにより、開発者の行動のパターンとデバッグの効率との間に関連を見い出した。その知見に基づいて、開発者のデバッグ能力を自動的に測定するシステムを試作した。このシステムは、計算機に入力されるコマンドから開発者の行動を自動的に推定し、さらに、その行動のパターンからデバッグの効率を自動的に推定する。3.開発者の設計能力の評価に関連する指標さらなるデバッグ作業の観察・分析により、デバッグや変更の容易なソフトウェアの構造についての知見を得た。その知見に基づいて、ソフトウェア設計を評価するための尺度を定義した。この尺度は、開発者の設計能力を評価するために利用できると考えている。なお、研究計画においては、上述の1と2に加えて、能力測定システムの有効性を評価するための実験を予定していた。この実験については、現在も継続中である。3については、研究計画に含まれていなかったが、研究の過程において、その有効性を見い出したので、研究の対象に加えた。
