Pathological study on age-related and neoplastic lesions of nonhuman primates

We examined monkeys histopathologically in 1995 and 1996, which had been preserved in Gifu University and Kyoto University, Research Institute of Primatology.As for age-related lesions, basal ganglia mineralizations, Marinesco bodies and polyglucosandbodies were found in the aged brains. Incidence and severity of these lesions was increasing with age. In the heart, focal or diffuse myocardial degeneration was frquently observed but cause ofthe lesion is not clear. In the kidney, moderate to severe renal oxal osis were often observed in wild-caught Japanese macaques, which might be due to ingestion of oxalate-containing plants.Reports of neoplasms have been extremly rare in nonhuman primates. In this study, we observed several rare tumors in monkeys. The pathologic features of these tumors were well resembled to human's, and were very interesting and significant from view point of comparative oncology. The tumors were astrocytoma in the brain, oral odontoameloblastoma, gastric adenocarcinoma, cecal tubular adenocarcinoma, rectal signet-ring cell carcinoma, abdominal lymphoma, adrenal myelolipoma, pancreatic endocrine carcinoma and thracic basal cell tumor.
