(1)死の概念の発達Piagetらが言及する幼児から児童期はじめにおける子どもの死の概念形成に大きな影響を及ぼすと考えられているアニミズムは、子どもの想像性や感受性、また共感性とも深く関わって、死の複雑な側面の理解と受容(特に感情的、認知的理解、受容)を助けていることがうかがえた。また、一般的に幼児は未分化な感情体験と死という状況を認知する過程で恐ろしいという体験を訴えやすいが、これは、現実、具体的な死の体験頻度と、親や他の情報源から与えられる死に関する言及から、見捨てられ不安や処罰を連想しやすくなっていることがうかがえた。また、年令があがるにつれ、死の概念と自己イメージとの関連がみられ、さらに、死を時間的、人間関係的、宇宙的関わりのなかでとらえようとする視点が現れ、生とのより複雑な関係性に言及して、その関係から死のポジテヴな意義を理解するようになる。(2)子どもたちに死を教育すること改まって教育をしているところは少なく、保健体育や家庭科、道徳、倫理社会のなかで、僅かに取り上げられているようだ。低年令の段階では、クラスで飼っていた動物の死や誕生を機会に具体的に説明がなされることもあり、年令があがるとニュースや記事をもとにデイスカッションをしている。死に関する恐怖感や動揺は年令に関係なくみられ、低年令では特に、見捨てられ不安と結びついた恐怖感が訴えられる。死の教育の目的は、第一に人間に限らない、宇宙的な規模における生命の理解で、第二に死の受容、即ち喪失体験の受容である。教育は、子どもの感情、認知、行動の3面に注意深く配慮し、子ども一人の一人の状態を考慮しつつ、talking outやdrawingなどのself-expressionの機会をもうけて、幼児(一部の青年にも)においては、ファンタジ-も大切に活用して行われることが可能であることがうかがえた。教材として使える絵本や小説は、現在収集中である。
