日本人被験者を対象とした一連の実験社会心理学的研究によって、国家への帰属意識が、日米両国民に関するステレオタイプ的認知におよぼす影響を調べた。研究1では、大学生および短期大学生325名に、「国家主義」「愛国心」「国際主義」の三次元から成る「国家帰属意識尺度」を施した。そして、これらの各次元を代表する態度項目について、日・米各国民中に意見がどのように分布するかを推定させた。結果は、内集団成員である日本人には、被験者自身の態度を投影した分布認知をするが、外集団成員(アメリカ人)が対象の場合にはその傾向が生じないことを示した。後者の場合はむしろ、被験者の態度に関係なく、大多数の国民が典型的意見に集中していると知覚する、一種の「外集団均質化効果」が見られた。国家主義的態度を例にとると、この態度が強い人は、日米双方の国民が国家主義に集中しているという二分法的知覚を示すが、そうした態度の強くない中庸な被験者は、日本人についてのみ中庸な立場を過大視した。愛国心、国際主義についても同様の結果が得られた。研究2では、19〜81才の、さまざまな年齢・職業の一般市民372名を対象に同じ方法で実験を行った。結果研究1と同様で、結果の一般化に成功した。日米間のイメージギャップの中でも特に、極化した分布推定という認知傾向およびその規定要因を明らかにした点で、本研究の結果は重要である。この他、ステレオタイプと一貫する情報および矛盾する情報に対する、記憶および判断過程を調べる実験の予備的研究を行い、刺激材料の作成と従属変数の検討を完了した。
