表象という観点からアメリカ世紀転換期文学を読み直す、この時代の文学テキストが社会と文化に対して持った関わりを明らかにする、という課題をかかげたこの研究は、「生命のメカニズム」という拙論の形で、部分的にではあるが結実した。ここで私が展開した主張を概略的にいえば、急速な産業の発展によって人々が「ふつうの毎日」と感ずるもの(現実)が変容をこうむり、そしてこの現実の非現実感を解決しようとした歴史的無意識の企画が文化的な身体の最構築として現れた、というものである。そこでは、アメリカ世紀転換期においてきわめて特徴的であるのに今まであまり批評家に指摘されなかった、「書く」という行為と峻別されるべき新聞という大量生産の自己製造が指摘される。これが文明の行き過ぎ(overcivilization)と都市からの逃走というモチーフとの関係において論じられている。文学は文化の一部分なのだから、それをそのままに映すしかないのだが、それでもそれにコメントしながら、文化を(時に生活をも)作ってゆく文学のダイナミズムが活かされた論考になっていると思う。しかし、いわゆる「自然主義作家」も分析の対象とはしているものの、この論はジャック・ロンドンという作家に焦点を当てている。むろん、彼があまりに特徴的であるから、あまりに当時の言説を文字通りに反映しているから、という意図もあるのだが、それでも、たとえば都市化、産業化、消費社会化、大国の帝国主義化といった今日的でさえある問題の多くが10年、20年という短期間におこったこの時代を、十分に理解するのには、まだ研究は始まったばかりである点も認めないわけにはいかないだろう。企業の論理である生産のマネイジメントと、出産という人の(再)生産の管理が同一レベルでおこったこの時代を、女性作家の分析へと繋げなければ、男性のジャンルと批判される「自然主義」を「転換期文学」と言い換える意味はないだろう。
