アメリカ世紀転換期の消費社会化、帝国主義、産業主義の言説を参照枠として、「自然主義」(R・H・デイヴィスからJ・ロンドンまで)の作品を読み解くことを目標としたこの研究は、まず、ロンドンのクロンダイク--帝国主義的進出の地である--での足跡をまとめる成果をあげた。だがこれは、結果として、伝統的な伝記研究以上の視点を提供してくれた点に真の成果があったと言えると思う。クロンダイク作品を一つのローカル・カラー文学と考える時、彼が最晩年にハワイ、タヒチなどに興味を示して「南海もの」というジャンルの、ローカル・カラーの作品の残したことは、この時代の言説との関わりにおいて示唆的である。なぜなら、どちらも、「地方」を中心、あるいは本国に結びつけて、アメリカがワールド・パワーとしての国家建設をなし遂げたことを陰画として映しているからである。そこには、白人から見た異民族との身体的な接触により、非白人を--ロンドンは、これをローカル・カラーと呼ぶ--生産のための消費者にしていく過程が描かれる。血縁という「自然」のカテゴリーに分類されるものが「文化的」に生産されるのである(「南海もの」)。同時に、白人が白人としてのアイデンティティーを獲得ないし生産していく姿も描かれ(クロンダイク」もの)、これは、ちょうどアメリカが「成人」するためにクロンダイク、メキシコ、太平洋諸島という他者を必要としたという歴史と相似形をなしている。(これについては、論文を準備中である。)では、男性作家の「自然主義」に対して、従来女性作家を分類する時に用いられてきたローカル・カラーの作家はどうであったろうか?現段階ではデイヴィスの例までしか研究が進んでいないが、同様のプロセスがあったと言ってよいだろう。「結婚市場」という短篇を残した作家は、地方が(ニュー・イングランドやルイジアナ)商業化されて、いわば国家の内面が帝国としてのアイデンティティーを獲得してゆく姿を『アメリカ生活の影』に書き残している。
